PARTICIPANT COMMENTS
International Telecommunications Company
Workshop
Facilitated by Byron Stock
New first-level managers participated in the Inner Quality Management® (IQM) workshop as part of the company's New Manager Training Program. Managers' comments were gathered at several intervals during and after the program. Presented below are sample comments organized around the original goals of the workshop. The IQM workshop is an on-going part of the company's orientation to effective management practice at the company.
Increase Personal Productivity
... I have started to get my priorities straight.
I have noticed an increase in doing my priorities and not sweating the small stuff.
I have noticed a great improvement when I am at work and at home in prioritizing what really needs to get done and what really can wait. Before, I would stress myself out trying to do everything. I would even get more stressed at the end of the day when all of it would not get done.
I'm doing more of the things that are important to me.
This has helped me to do things that I wouldn't otherwise get to do over the last week.
Began allowing others to carry share of load on projects. Hesitated temptations to take over.
Gain Greater Mental Clarity
By taking a moment to use the Freeze-Frame® tool, I feel I am not making snap decisions.
I have been making decisions at work and feel they are the best decisions I could make. Before, I would worry too much about it being a good decision.
The Heart Lock-In® tool has helped get me in a more calm and relaxed state so I tend now to not make 'off-the-hip' decisions. I use more reason without the excess negative influences to make better decisions.
I am able to clear my head so that I increase the chances that the decisions I make will be better ones.
I think more clearly now before I speak.
When I have been faced with a challenging task, if I remember to use the Freeze-Frame tool maybe even the Heart Lock-In tool, things do seem clearer.
The Freeze-Frame tool allows me to focus on a task efficiently.
... find that the more calm I can remain, the easier I can solve a problem or resolve a situation.
Manage Relationships More Effectively
... now I believe I am getting my point across more effectively during conflicts. I am able to find the right words more quickly.
... people understand me more quickly than before. I don't have to explain myself or my words as much anymore.
Using the Freeze-Frame tool keeps me from raising my voice in conflict situations.
Usually when my spouse and I get into an argument it would be a sniping session. Now I reduce my stress and jerk reactions with the Freeze-Frame tool and defuse more quickly.
I have been able to spend more time with the family.
Able to defuse my usual reactions to create a better dialogue that makes for a better outcome for different situations. Works well at home, not used at work yet.
Have regained closer relationship with spouse ...
Manage Emotional Reactiveness
When people interrupt me, I stop and listen instead of becoming frustrated.
I have found that I don't get upset like I used to do.
When people disrupt a project I'm on, I don't get as frustrated.
I have been able to often think about what I'm going to say or do before doing it.
I do not flare up in traffic like I did.
Increase Balance
I've found time to play more than I used to. I make better choices of my time.
I have done this more than I thought I would have. I've started to take more time for me.
I don't feel like I'm being pulled in two different directions. Seeing that it's not the amount of time anymore, but where I spend my time is the important part.
Spending more time with wife. Less worry about job - heck, less worry period!
Listen More, Talk Less
When talking with my spouse, I have begun to listen to my spouse more ...
... Usually when my spouse has a problem, I try to solve it and that leads to tension between us. This weekend I just listened to my spouse talk about it, and my spouse felt better even though I didn't solve anything.
Reduce Stress And Worry
Heart Lock-In (technique has) given me the time to really block everything out which in turn reduces my worries.
It has been useful if I have a hard time falling asleep ...
... Helps clear my mind and get a good nights rest.
...I'm now taking better care of myself, family, and friends.
Increase Personal Creativity
Letting others have input in decision making - more people; new ideas. For example, asked employees to have input in time/money cutting expense.
The Freeze-Frame tool helps to release thought process to find imaginative solutions.
Develop More Self-Confidence
I am more open about myself and my beliefs with others ... I believe that this has something to do with greater self-confidence. I believe in myself more and am not worried as much about what others may think of my actions or ideas.
I'm expressing more of my own personal ideas and feelings to people a lot sooner in the relationship than I did before the class.
Develop More Empathy
I've noticed that I put myself in others' shoes more now.
This has helped me to understand how or why some people may do different things.
A Final Course Comment ...
Excellent program due in large part to Byron Stock. Byron truly believes what he is teaching and, for me, that gives tremendous credibility. The scientific figures actually result in being a back-up or verification to Byron's commitment and believability.
