Developing Emotional Competence™ Program
Large Transportation System Organization's
Leadership Development Program
July, 2005 - November, 2005

Introduction

From July 2005 through November 2005, a Developing Emotional Competence™ Program was facilitated for a group of high-potential employees of a large transportation system organization's Leadership Development Program. A total of 9 participants were trained. All participants (100% sample) articipated in the end of course impact interviews. Following are impact interview responses to the final question of the impact interview. (See Results for more detail on program results.)

If you could tell organizational executives, leaders, and managers about the Developing Emotional Competence program, what would you say?
I have personally benefited from the using the techniques in this course. Of all the things that we have learned, being able to react non-emotionally and use the tools to react in an informed way has benefited me and obviously benefited the company. I am calm and informed and respond to difficult situations positively.

I think that on the surface when I heard about it, I wondered what we were getting into. I didn't see how it could be relevant to our jobs. Once we learned and used the techniques - and you must use them - everyone could definitely benefit by learning and using them. It is hard beforehand, it can sound hokey, but it definitely was worth it. This program can be beneficial for upper management all the way through service center management level.

The program and the tools provide you with an ability to look at things from an open-minded standpoint and the ability to be a better leader. That's what it has driven in me. I lead people better. It has definitely helped me in my career.

The program is beneficial for (our group) and all our leadership, for managers and supervisors. So much of being a leader is intangible. It's not on a piece of paper. It is the intangible on how to think and what to look for. If we start from the inside out by developing our Emotional Intelligence, we can understand ourselves and what our company needs to be and do.

The program is very successful. I bought into it. It is a tremendous tool for our managers from SCM up to executives. Using the techniques enables you to slow down the playing field, so you can stop, think, and make better decisions. You can see the problems coming quicker and you can make adjustments quicker.

It has had a positive impact on my performance and my ability to communicate with my people and with customers. It has had a positive impact on my ability to communicate ideas to people. I have improved my relationship with my direct reports. I'm a better listener and I'm more responsive. I understand the issues now; I hear them now.

I generally just feel a lot more comfortable with what I'm doing and how I'm doing it. It's very positive. My stress level is down; I'm more focused. I'm getting more done without having to work so hard. It is giving me free "mental time" which I didn't have before the program. I'm feeling a lot better about things. The tools have heightened my level of awareness in communication, personal health, and in managing my own emotions.

This program has helped me. It has decreased my stress and worry. It has allowed me to be more productive. It has allowed me to have more balance in my life. I would like to thank (our) executives for making me a part of this group and giving me exposure to these techniques that have benefited me tremendously.
