Developing Emotional Competence™ Program
Mid-size Transportation System Organization's
Leadership Development Curriculum
July, 2004 - January, 2005

Introduction

From July 2004 through January 2005, a Developing Emotional Competence™ Program was facilitated for a group of high-potential employees of a mid-sized transportation system. Twenty-four participants were trained. Nine participants (38% sample) participated in the end of course impact interviews. Following are impact interview responses to the final question of the impact interview. (See Results for more detail on program results.)

If you could tell organizational executives, leaders, and managers about the Developing Emotional Competence program, what would you say?

Check it out. Go to one of the courses. I would love to go to the Institute. I encourage others to check it out and go to the program. I would like to learn more. I feel very positive especially during this time. I could have committed career suicide because I was in a bad place. The program helped pull me through even when I didn't feel like it.

It's a method of gaining some emotional stability looking inward as to where you are and where you need to be and standing off to the side and examining what kind of person you actually are. And then once able to see some of the things you do, you can examine some things you are doing wrong because you're not seeing things from another's point-of-view. And it helps you get in touch with your inner self. So you can be a better you. I've never looked at this program as a benefit to (the organization). I've always looked at it as a benefit to myself. If I can improve myself personally and professionally, I would be a better person. I've gone through a lot of different management programs (time management, productivity, etc.), but nothing has ever geared toward the self - the person. I have had personality inventories, but never had anything that would help me that I could relate to. And I can relate to this program.

Just like anything else, you need to buy into the philosophy or concept. If you don't, it won't work. If you truly buy in and feel it, it will make a huge impact, and it has in my life.

The program is motivating. It releases you from a lot of the world worries - everything that I was worrying about and stressed me out - stuff I couldn't control anyhow. I love it, highly recommend it and strongly encourage it.

If you can take it, definitely take it. It's worked wonders for me. I thought I was a hard nut to crack. I told my spouse about it, and s/he is catching on. I have told some people at work about it. If there were a way I could get them to take it, it would be great. If it helped me, it could help anybody. It's all about you wanting to do it.

The program would pay dividends for anybody who goes through it. We live in such an emotionally charged society and our culture is so high stress that the whole concept of emotional intelligence and understanding the importance of managing relationships and emotions so as to build relationships and not destroy them is a critical life tool. Byron is right on the money as this is a "mission critical" opportunity. If relationships are important to you, than managing emotions is critical for success.

If you can get into the program, go in and really listen to what they are saying. Really use the exercises, because it will help you to some degree. Some people are different than others. The tools do work. You may not see improvement immediately, but it works. I can truly say it works. Some people may be using the tools and progressing and not realizing it, and Byron helps bring it to light (points out the successes).

Be part of it, learn it, and apply it to your life. Once you learn it, use it. Don't let it drift away. It makes you feel great. You need to do it every day to make it become a part of your life. I thought it was fantastic - amazing. The Heart Lock-In® technique just amazes me. I can feel heat in my hands when I'm done with it - and emotional too. Pretty neat.

They really need to sit down, listen, and read the information. Have a class with Byron. Listen to what he says. Look at the evidence and proof he has and experiment and experience this for yourself. You've got to do this for yourself. Give this a shot. Give it a try. For example, I've got a particular driver who has been a dock worker and moved up to driving and wasn't where he wanted to be in regards to pay. So I showed him the Freeze-Frame® technique. It has turned this man's life around. Has gotten his Class A license. His pay increased by 6%. He feels the sky is the limit. I have seen people with less confidence than I rally and take off. I pushed him and hounded him to do this.
