Reduction in Stress Symptoms

2000

120 students in the 6th grade have been selected for a pilot to evaluate the impact of using the HeartMath tools for stress management and emotional management on FCAT performance and student self-concept. There are 2 groups: students in drop out prevention (25 to be trained and 25 control) and students in regular education classes (35 to be trained and 35 control). In September, 2000 self-concept will be measured using the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale. Throughout the 2000/2001 school year, students in the trained group will receive 20 to 24 total hours of training in HeartMath stress and emotional management tools, applying the tools to test-taking anxiety, peer pressure, and other areas of emotional stress. The classroom training will be conducted by two teachers who were first trained in August, 1998 by April Frank, certified HeartMath facilitator. The teachers then completed the certification program at the Institute of HeartMath for classroom curriculum facilitation. Prior to completing the FCAT in February, 2001, these students will complete the Piers-Harris again. FCAT scores and Piers-Harris data will then be correlated.
