There are five techniques that specifically address the five emotional competencies you need to develop for successful living. - A "Learning Map"
The "map" serves as a visual reference, to help you see how each technique builds skills in one or more of the five emotional intelligence competencies. It can serve as a reference so you know how you're progressing.
- A Way to Identify Your Needs
This book enables you to identify what you want to improve through the 17 Personal Goals in Chapter 2, and then shows you in the Personal Goals/Techniques Matrix which techniques you can use to experience improvement.
- Immediate Help for Your Specific Situations
We read books because we believe they will benefit us in some way. The Personal Goal Setting activity (Chapter 2) enables you to list specific situations you are experiencing in which the techniques can be used to help you immediately.
- "Doing," Not Just "Knowing"
One of the most beneficial learnings from studies and applications of instructional design (training) principles is the need to ask the right questions. In this case the first question is, "What do you want to be able to do as a result of reading and using this book?" The second question then follows, "What is the minimum content you need to know in order to do it?" Reminder stickers help you remember to use what you have learned. Download an Acrobat PDF file of reminder stickers from our web site and print the file on a standard sheet of 1" x 2" adhesive labels. I can divide my world by the date I attended Byron's session and learned how to recognize and apply the techniques presented in this book. It was amazing. At the time, I had 106 offices to oversee, 1300 employees, complement reductions, challenging revenue/operating expenses/performance targets, a large active family, and I was obtaining my doctorate degree at Pepperdine University. My life was very full and more than a little challenging.
Applying the techniques in SMART EMOTIONS for Busy Business People provided me, a busy business person, with a sense of calm in the midst of many storms. It can do the same for you. Byron has written this book in the way he teaches his sessions - with the intent to connect to you as a reader and as a person who will greatly benefit from understanding and applying these techniques. The techniques are simple, practical, quick to apply, always available as personal and professional tools, and literally life-changing.

Imagine an author who begins his book by pointing out right up front what you don't have to read in order to reap the benefits of his time-proven program.
You don't need to tell Byron Stock you don't have time to study any "self-help-feel-good" book that promises smooth sailing in your career-at the cost of adding more obligations to your already crowded day. You can tell that he's experienced firsthand the pressures of "busy-ness" in his own work life and career. A leader of his own training company, he voices a genuine concern for sharing what has proved out in the countless lives he has influenced - just read some of the comments at the back of SMART EMOTIONS.
"I know you are beyond busy," he writes in his opening pages, "Is this book for you?" My answer is an unqualified Yes!
The author's engineering background shows in the skill with which the book is organized and presented. From the beginning, "Quick Information" offers a Decision Guide and Smart Emotions Map to direct you to the sections of the book that will be most helpful.
I came to SMART EMOTIONS with a mind completely uncluttered by any previous knowledge of Emotional Intelligence. Learning and practicing the techniques, exercises and stratagems, and successfully applying them under his gentle guidance, has inspired in me a desire to know more about the why's and what's of the field. I come back to the book again and again to discover more of the scientific and practical research. The findings constantly reinforce my own deeply sensed but often undefined and unsupported convictions about the connection between feelings and behavior. The passages about the power of the heart-more powerful than the brain!-to influence events in and around me are astounding.
I find myself saying "A-ha!" and "Why haven't I put it to work in my daily life before now?" Perhaps I needed the sensitive, understanding and impressively knowledgeable guidance of a master of the techniques. And, the reassurance of the rock-solid, valid scientific basis that underlies the techniques. All this I found in SMART EMOTIONS.
Whether you are a busy business person or a busier-than-busy housewife, parent, caretaker or street cleaner, I highly recommend that you just open the cover of this book and skim through the opening pages and then learn and practice the techiques. You'll be glad you did.

Most of us are so busy working, raising families, and paying bills that we never find the time to learn how to reduce our stress. This book reviews the science of using our hearts to find balance. After practicing the techniques, you will see a HUGE difference in the way you approach solving problems, making decisions, and dealing with the relationships in your life. I'm going to give it four stars, simply because I have no idea what it takes to get five. This book is awesome!

My first reaction, upon reading SMART EMOTIONS was "Wow!" Now I need to tell you why. First, such a practical resource is needed for our businesses, our schools and hospitals and our families. We require more emotionally intelligent people and organizations who can demonstrate the agility needed for the pace of change and the resilience to thrive in its disruptiveness. Secondly, the information and techniques provided here will help us make the changes we want to make to succeed in our personal and professional lives.
Why would we pick up SMART EMOTIONS? We all want to focus and think more clearly, make better decisions, improve our performance and productivity and enhance our creativity. We want to strengthen our relationships through more effective communication, collaboration and conflict resolution. We want to be stronger coaches and team players.
